Attendance at Blacklow Brow
At Blacklow Brow School, we aim to develop in our pupils’ positive feelings about education and an awareness of, and a responsible attitude to, the value of good attendance and punctuality. We celebrate attendance by having weekly certificates and stickers given to the year group with the highest weekly attendance. This is displayed on our Attendance Noticeboard. At the end of each term every child from Reception through to Year 6 who has achieved 100% attendance receives a Bronze (1 term), Silver (2 terms) or a Gold (3 terms) special pin badge/medal in a special celebration assembly.
Throughout the year we also are involved in the attendance challenge initiatives developed by Knowsley Schools Attendance Service, for example the recent 30 Day Challenge. We were so proud that 88 of our children (Reception to Year 6) achieved 100% attendance during this 30 Day Challenge period (27/11/2015 to 22/1/2016).

What should I do if my child is absent?
If your child is absent from school, please phone school office in the morning before 8.30. (0151 477 8010).
First Day Response
Blacklow Brow operates “First Day Response”. This means that if your child is absent and we have not received communication from you by 9.00am then we will contact you to establish why your child is absent. If we are concerned about any aspect of your child’s attendance, we will contact you by letter and / or phone call to arrange to meet with you in school to discuss how we can resolve the problem.
If your child’s absence continues, we may perform a home visit to ascertain how the school may support you in returning your child to school. We want to ensure that all absences are recorded accurately and where ongoing, the root of the problem is established and support is put in to place to resolve the problem.
We also work very closely with Knowsley’s Attendance Service and in cases of persistent absence, they may wish to contact you directly to discuss the problem with you. The persistent absence threshold, set by the Department of Education, is currently 10%. Therefore, children are considered as persistent absentees if they miss more than 10% of their possible sessions in school which equates to approximately 6 days over a term.
Removal during the School Day
Medical and dental appointments should be made outside of school hours. If it is unavoidable that your child needs to be taken out of school during the school day advance notice must be given and we must see a copy of the appointment card or letter for our records.
All absences are recorded on your child’s record of attendance and you will be given an “Off site” permission slip to take with you whilst you and your child are not on the school premises.
Please do not hesitate to contact us, should you have any concerns in relation to your child’s attendance.
Holidays during Term Time
There is no legal entitlement for any leave of absence from Blacklow Brow Primary School during term time. Any applications for leave of absence must be made in advance using the Leave of Absence Form, available from the school Reception. Any request can only be authorised where the Headteacher accepts there are exceptional circumstances. Going on holiday during term time is NOT classed as exceptional circumstances.
