At Blacklow Brow we recognise and value the importance of each child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and the significant part it plays in each child’s ability to learn and achieve.

We believe that spiritual, moral, social and cultural education should be a “golden thread” running through every area of the curriculum and in every planned and spontaneous experience in school.

Teaching children about the ‘British Values’ (democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith) is a key element of our SMSC curriculum and wider philosophy.

All the curriculum areas within our Early Years and Foundation Stage have a contribution to make to the child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and opportunities for this are planned in each area of the curriculum.

All the children from Year 1 through to Year 6 have a weekly SMSC morning assembly which is further developed in an afternoon lesson. This follows our yearly cycle of SMSC themes and values which is constantly updated to take into account our rapidly changing world and the different learning opportunities that may arise. Our weekly newsletter will always let you know what SMSC theme / value has been focussed on in that particular week.
